The Power of Bananas
Most of us know that we need to get more fruit in our diets, and given their convenience and numerous health benefits, bananas are often our “go to” fruit snack. Bananas are high in:
- Potassium – to ease muscle cramping
- Vitamin B6 – to help in weight loss, bolster the nervous system, and help produce white blood cells
- Fiber – to help digestive functions
However, is a banana a smart choice for your teeth?
Fruit and Your Teeth
A major trade-off when it comes to getting enough fruit in your diet is the fact that a lot of fruit is very high in sugar, which is bad news for your teeth. However, banana lovers need not worry. One large banana contains around 16 grams of sugar. Compare this to a large apple, which contains about 23 grams of sugar, or to a cup of grapes, which also contains 23 grams. These figures, combined with the known benefits of the banana, suggest that it is indeed a perfectly healthy choice for your teeth.
Can a Banana Whiten My Teeth?
A popular rumor circulating the Internet recently suggests that a person can whiten teeth by rubbing a banana peel on them. Unfortunately, this has been proven to be an urban legend. Proper teeth health requires a good diet, good brushing, flossing, consistent mouthwash habits, and regular trips to the dentist and the orthodontist.
